State Senator Brian Stewart and State Representative Andrew Chesney celebrated the reading achievements of 136 students August 27th, at a recognition ceremony for participants of their 2022 Summer Reading Club Program at Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square in Freeport.
“Reading can take us to many different places and opens doors for new ideas and activities,” Senator Stewart said. “We are very proud of these students for their commitment to reading this summer, which also helps them better prepare for the upcoming school year. We hope they enjoyed the exciting adventures they found in the books they read.”
Participating students who read at least eight books during the summer were awarded official certificates from the Illinois Senate and the Illinois House of Representatives recognizing their commitment to reading. They were also invited to an official presentation commemorating their
achievements at the Lincoln-Douglas Debate Site, and an ice cream party at the legendary Union Dairy Ice Cream Parlor next door.
“Many thanks to all the students who participated, and to their family members who supported their efforts this summer,” said Representative Chesney. “Reading is its own reward, but official recognition and ice cream at Union Dairy are also great incentives to keep our young people reading and excelling.”
The participating students are from communities in the 45th Senate and 89th House Districts.
