James Stevko, a New York City-based dancer and actor, will teach two exclusive dance master classes in Sterling on Saturday, October 1st. The workshops, for intermediate to advanced dancers ages 10-adult, are presented by Woodlawn Arts Academy at Centennial Auditorium, Sterling High School
Stevko will teach a 90-minute ballet class from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The class will focus on alignment, technique and style; the building blocks of injury prevention; and advanced tricks. After a short break, the second workshop, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., will lead dancers through a jazz warm-up with adage, turns and jumps.
The warm-up will be followed by a musical theatre combo where dancers will have the opportunity to cultivate their acting ability into storytelling through dance. Tuition for each workshop is $18, or attend both for $30. Dancers are invited to an optional Q&A session following the second workshop. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify. To register, call Woodlawn at 815-626-4278 or visit the Woodlawn Arts Academy office.
A New York City based dancer and actor originally from Chicago, Stevko is a graduate of Northern Illinois University’s Dance Performance Program, where he started dancing at the age of 18. He is currently in the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” James made his principal acting debut in the award-winning production of “Fiddler” in Yiddish, directed by Tony, Golden Globe and Academy Award winning Director Joel Grey and is a soloist on the cast album.
Previously, he has also danced with The Metropolitan Opera, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes, Milwaukee Ballet, City Ballet of San Diego, Drury Lane and The Paramount. He has been featured in Dance Teacher Magazine, Dance Informa, and the New York Times Bestseller “I Will Teach You to be Rich.”
As a late starter, James has a unique perspective on dance technique and longevity in dance by coaching with NYC’s most sought-after coaches that aide the world’s top dancers in injury recovery and prevention.
Woodlawn Arts Academy is a partner agency of United Way of Whiteside and Lee counties, and programs are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
